The Refusal of any Cooperation with Rolf Martens
- - -
Document of Autumn 1994
The same man who denounced our organization as a bourgeois party, who titled us a degenerated organization and so on, using the same ridiculous slanders again and again, in 1994 invited our organization for cooperation even for political analyse.

We answered him in a letter principally stressing:
No cooperation is possible on the condition of such slanders!

This document is also interesting for our estimation of the whole political thinking of Rolf Martens, and not only of him.

The letter is reproduced unabridgedly here (including two short paragraphs dealing with technical questions of minor meaning)

Now follows the document of Autumn 1994:

Dear Mr. Rolf Martens

after a summer break we want to answer your letter of June 14, 1994.

It must be stressed once again with regard to you that at your "withdrawal", when you raised accusations of the worst kind against our organization, you did not give any explanations which could deserve the name of grounds. The exclusive argument which you brought forward then, was that our organization allegedly did no more fight sufficiently the green tendency, and for that as an alleged proof the leaflet of 30.4.89 was taken with its explanations on the "Greens". But these actually prove the exact opposite. Furthermore you tried to refer to alleged utterances of individual members, which according to you they had made during some separate talks, but all tape records and written documents spoke against you.

The statement of our organization, stated ever again and unanimously, self-evidently to continue to fight, as ever before, the "Greens" and the green policy of the bourgeoisie, did not cause any motion upon your side, because you wanted the rupture and camouflaged your real reasons. In this way things were emphasized already then in connection with your exclusion. Your assertion that our organization was "capitulating in the face of the green policy of the bourgeoisie" was nothing but an invention and a pretext in order to conceal quite different things. Our activities at that time as well as the following ones, as well as our position as a whole have long since given the lie to that absurd assertion.

During the weeks before the conference you had been asked to present your points of criticism in writing. Instead of doing so, you mugged the organization with the bold assertion that it had changed sides, because we had capitulated in the face of the green policy of the bourgeoisie. It is no wonder that you were not able to put these hostilities into written grounds in April 1990. Although you had been granted the opportunity to hand in the written grounds during the immediate period of time after the conference, you did not do so. It had been declared to you that coming with your grounds later than after six weeks you would be too late. This had already been an obligingness in itself, for the grounds had been due at the very conference. But you did not present any grounds even during the full six weeks, because you could not do that.

The monstruous, completely unsubstantiated assertions that our organization had changed sides, which were made without any grounds in a provoking manner and repeatedly, lead to your exclusion by us during the conference.

All this is well known to you, and in letters like this one you try to camouflage these basically simple interrelations. You used exactly the same pretexts to motivate your intention to withdraw from the organisation.

After the repeated slanderings the conference decided your exclusion. Klaus Sender stated towards you that the organization cannot tolerate completely arbitrary, ridiculous accusations thrown randomly after its head. You declared your withdrawal at the second day of the conference, to be exact: during the night of Saturday to Sunday, April 16, 1990, at 1 h. am approximately, when the motion for your exclusion had already been proposed, and it was already becoming clear, at the question of the chairman of the session if there was an opposing vote, that presumably you were going to be excluded unanimously. Your withdrawal, which you declared instantly before the exclusion, invalidates by no means the decision of the organization to exclude you. This decision manifests that the organization was by itself not at all willing to tolerate such a slandering and miserable split-making.

Typically enough, you combined your rudeness that the organization and its chairman had changed sides, with a simultaneous "offer" of further discussion and cooperation. It was however declared to you that after slanderings and snubs of that kind, after that arbitrary running down no discussion was possible. Your whole behaviour also gave rise to many questions as to its own inner logic. So much about the conference of April 14-16, 1990.

Full five months later you sent us a paper, which again contained many slanderings, now however together with numerous new hostilities and absurd accusations, which you never before had raised within the organization, although you had had the opportunity to do so. This paper contains numerous completely false indirect accounts of statements of our organization as well as some accounts of unauthorized inner-party contributions to discussions, mainly of unchecked transcriptions and summaries of tape records.

Out of the political statements of our organization only the three leaflets of May 1st, 1990, are being quoted. The critique of these publications is nonsensical and self-revealing, on top of everything these documents were published after the conference and by no means could have been the cause for your withdrawal. If you want, please translate these documents without abridgements into the Swedish and English language, by doing so you will discredit yourself.

As an example:
In one of the two leaflets of May 1st, 1990, nuclear energy is being defended and the Greens are attacked. About this leaflet you assert, exclusively referring to one single passage where word is about "protection of the natural ressources", that the organization was promoting green propaganda. Even taken alone this passage tells about the quality of the argument of Rolf Martens.

You can‘t be serious when you expect us, after your actions, five months after your "withdrawal", to get into an written discussion with you, which you easily could have had within the organization, with only a minimum of cooperative will upon your side. This paper, too, however full of slanderings of our organization, is ridiculous in the end, so that our organization could take the existence of this paper calmly. Not going into such a paper does not by any means say that it is correct.

Actually not more is to be said about this paper.

Naturally we reserve, however, for ourselves to go into this or that so-called argument of this paper at an occasion when we deem it important.
But this lies completely within our discretion.

Your remarks and your manner of using pretexts suggested already at that time, that actually it was the article "Leninism and Civilization" by Klaus Sender, published in August 1989 resp. December 1989, which triggered your attacks, as well as the criticism of the fundamentals, which was ongoing in the discussion at that time, both of which you could not invalidate. The article "Leninism and Civilization" you had to acknowledge as correct, because you could not refute it in any way. You even went so far as to confirm Klaus Sender in delivering such an important contribution, which "newly impregnates the labor movement", and at the same moment to accuse him of changing sides!

You also raised accusations connected to the intended alteration of the name of our organization, into "Group NEUE EINHEIT" for instance, for which there existed and still exist a lot of reasons. An alteration of the name does not, taken for itself, signify any alteration of the foundations of an organization, definitely not, if the most characteristic component of the name is being preserved, it does not mean in particular a discarding of Marxism-Leninism either. Our organization presently is only something like a tightly consolidated group, and that should show also in its name. The concept NEUE EINHEIT from the beginning has comprised Marxism, Leninism and the teachings of Mao Zedong including their continuation by us, the assessment of our own practice of meanwhile more than 20 years, and the development of social theory that we have delivered.

This concept today, of course, appr. since the middle of the 80‘s, comprises also the critique of Leninism, and in case there will be more correct criticism, this also will become part of the fundamentals. What is incorrect about this? If a critique proves this or that to be incorrect, one has to accept it and cannot cling to something against insight.

--------------------------

The booklet of Febr. 1990 is not at our hands presently, but we shall investigate, if such a booklet exists, and who has it. In case it will be found it will be sent to you.

The special supplements 16,17,18 of the NEUE EINHEIT have been sent to you in the meantime. These issues you should have received before. It has happened several times, that letters by us did not arrive, therefore of course we send you the issues once again. It is for this reason that we asked to confirm the reception of the issues.

Your provocations and slanderings of then are being used by you, as we see today, for ongoing slanderings.
We state that, apparently very purposefully, you have not sent your slanderous fabrications to us for more than one year, although we are subscribers to your publications; apparently for the purpose that we could not be aware of these activities too early.

Concerning the question of copyrights on our publications and especially on the publications by Klaus Sender:

The right on translation and all rights on edition of these writings are residing with him as author and owner of the publishing house NEUE EINHEIT.
We emphasize with regard to you, that it is not allowed to publicate writings without his approvement. Herewith he expressly forbids any publication of his writings or of other publications of the publishing house NEUE EINHEIT in connection with the aforesaid slanderings and absurd assertions by you.

Of course we are glad about every translation in general, but not under any circumstances.

Concerning the translation of NEUE EINHEIT 1/73, which was made under your direction at that time, we have to state the following: the greater part of the contingent of finished exemplaries made at that time belongs to the publishing house NEUE EINHEIT. We have the impression, that the greatest part of this translation has stayed in the residence of that time, Bokgatan 12, where it belonged to the stock of the organization. Should this be the case, we want to point to our claim for the greater part of these exemplaries. Here these exemplaries have been missed for a long time. Is it so, that you offer these exemplaries for sale? We should be grateful for information about this point.

A discussion, an exchange of informations on international questions cannot, of course, take place under the conditions of your slanderings. By the slanderings of 1990 you have shown yourself in the worst light and aroused the heaviest suspicion against yourself. You behaved splittingly to the highest degree and like a conscious troublemaker. Because you could not refute this publication, you raised certain arguments functioning as pretexts. Later on, five months later, you shoved after more "arguments" in order to camouflage the true reasons for your withdrawal and your methods. For our organisation it has always been fundamental - you, having been a longtime member and cooperator, should know that very well -, that reality is for us the standard to the things. Any theory, Marxism-Leninism included, Marxism as well, have to be measured with reality and to be reviewed according to it. Whoever leaves this ground, always leaves the ground of any revolutionary standpoint and of reason in general.
